Steve Boysen owner of SB Surfboards and CASH Surfboards handcrafting a surfboard.

Steve Boysen spent his early years skateboarding and working on cars, developing the hands-on skills and eye for design that would later shape his surfboard-shaping career. In 1983, a spring break trip to San Diego introduced him to surfing—and within a week, he was hooked. That trip sparked a life-changing decision to work in the surf industry.

With a background in bodywork and fabrication, Steve began doing ding repair before transitioning into full-time shaping. His career took a major turn when he connected with Herbie Fletcher and began shaping boards for Christian Fletcher—a relationship that opened doors and cemented his reputation in the Southern California surf scene. Over the years, Steve has shaped for surfers around the world, while staying deeply rooted in the traditions of surf culture.

Steve’s journey spans decades of surf industry evolution and shaping across the globe—from the hand-shaped boards of the 1980s to machine-assisted production and the rise of wave pools and high-performance design. Through it all, he’s remained open to innovation while staying true to the hands-on craftsmanship that first drew him to shaping.

Today, Steve continues to shape custom boards and collaborate on special projects—working with some of the best new young talent in Southern California. Drawing from a deep well of experience and a passion for the craft, his boards reflect a legacy of quality and innovation. Whether it’s retro outlines, performance hybrids, or throwback Christian Fletcher models, every board carries the same dedication to craftsmanship and surf culture.
